Word – University of Aberdeen Writers Festival is one of the highlights of Scotland's cultural calendar. Over 40 authors, thinkers and commentators from all over the world come to Aberdeen for a three-day celebration of the written word with an energetic mix of readings, discussions, films and exhibitions. Previous names include Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney, Louis De Bernieres, Irvine Welsh, James Kelman, Louise Welsh, AL Kennedy, Colm Toibin, Richard E Grant, Liz Smith, Hardeep Singh Kohli and not forgetting a packed series of events for young readers. In 2009, Word will celebrate the year of Homecoming with the rest of the nation, with some extra special events showcasing word and culture. Be among the first to receive up-to-date information and a copy of the programme for the 2009 festival when it's launched early this year by joining our mailing list.

Basic Skills Agency - "Our aim is to help people of all ages who struggle with words and numbers in their everyday lives".

The Big Plus - The campaign, which forms part of the Scottish literacy and numeracy strategy, has been designed to encourage those adults in Scotland who need help with reading, writing and numbers to access local support. Please use our contact us page if you would like more information. The Big Plus is funded by Learning Connections and is supported by learndirect Scotland.

Consumer Education - "The Generation Europe Foundation has launched a new initiative, supported by the European Commission’s DG Health & Consumer Protection (DG Sanco), to educate young people about consumer affairs. The cornerstone of the Europe-wide effort is the Europa Diary: Wise Choices? – an agenda for the school year 2004/2005 that students aged 15-18 can use in class." Europass - Europass consists of five documents:

Scottish Corpus - An archive of the Scots language is now available all over the world thanks to a comprehensive new website. Researchers at GlasgowUniversity have completed work on the online resource, which contains more than four million words in Scots and Scottish English.

Association for Scottish Literature Studies - "The Association for Scottish Literary Studies aims to promote the study, teaching and writing of Scottish literature, and to further the study of the languages of Scotland".

The Book of Saint Fittick - "SAINT FITTICK, the ruins of whose church stand by the mouth of the "Cheerful Vale of Tullos," in Aberdeen, Scotland was the Patron Saint of Torry. The "Book of St. Fittick" is a gathering together of some fragments of history relating to the Torry district and what is inseparable from it—the harbour and the river mouth." Scottish Writers This is part of the firstfoot website and is listed on the left hand side of firstfoot's home page.

Anyone can submit stories to the site - you do need to be a member, but it's dead easy to join, and submitting stories etc is pretty straightforward. NB remember to email the webmaster afterwards to let them know you've submitted.
